Rosemary essential oil (Rosmarinus officinalis CT 1,8 Cineol - trying saying THAT 5x fast. Or just once, for that matter.) is a steam-distilled oil taken from the flowering plant. It smells like... you guessed it, rosemary! But much stronger than the plant, very herbaceous, and woody with "evergreen undertones".

It's said to affect the immune system, respiratory system, and nervous system, as well as other benefits and uses (many of which are listed below). In addition to its many physical properties, rosemary is also said to have an effect on the memory, opening the conscious mind, and assisting in learning.

Precautions of Rosemary Essential Oil

Avoid during pregnancy or if you have epilepsy. May cause issues if you have high blood pressure. Always test for skin sensitivity prior to widespread use and use on the feet when possible. Excessive use of any oil can lead to skin sensitization. Keep out of eyes, ears, or nose. Not all oils are created equal, so test brands carefully, and never use an oil in a way not recommended by its maker.

Popular Uses of Rosemary Essential Oil


  • Rub topically on bottom of feet or stomach to help with digestion.
  • Diffuse Rosemary, or apply topically to help reduce tension, stress, and fatigue.
  • Add 1–2 drops of Rosemary essential oil to meats and favorite entrees.

Inspiration for Using Rosemary Essential Oil

Anti-Wrinkle Blend: Mix together equal parts Geranium, Sandalwood, Lavender, Frankincense, Rosemary, and Lemon essential oil. Dilute as needed and use topically.

Rosemary Peppermint Shampoo: Combine 1/2 cup castile soap and 1/2 cup water or coconut milk and stir. Then add in 16 drops Rosemary and 2 drops Peppermint essential oil.

Eye Serum: Mix together almond oil and 12 drops each of Rosemary and Lavender essential oil. Put in roller bottle and use on puffy or red skin under the eyes.
