ST. JOHN’S WORT is a shrubby plant with clusters of yellow flowers. Traditionally, St. John’s Wort was used to treat infectious diseases such as colds, syphilis and tuberculosis. Today, it is regarded as an effective anti-depressive agent specifically indicated in the treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia and restlessness.
Depression is thought to be associated with low levels of chemical messengers in the brain. St John’s Wort exerts its antidepressant effect by increasing the levels of these chemical messengers. In many clinical studies, St. John’s Wort has shown to be an effective treatment for people suffering from mild to moderate depression where symptoms such as lack of activity, tiredness and fatigue were also relieved.
Various studies have also shown that St. John’s Wort is beneficial in the treatment of insomnia.
