Dark Rose, or Rosa rugosa is a species of rose native to eastern Asian, in northeastern China, Japan and Korea and southeastern Siberia. In Japan, it is known as "hamanasu", in China, it is called "meiguihua" and in Korea, it is called "haedanghwa". Although rugosa rose is regarded as a common feature of New England's beaches, it actually was introduced to the region in 1770s from Asia.
Rugosa rose is notable for rough (rugose) and leathery leaves, which makes it very drought tolerant and very easy to grow even in poor conditions. Rugosa rose is extremely fragrant. It has a thicker scent than rose damascena. However, both the roses enjoy similar therapeutic properties.
